...........Small_Manly_Daily_shot

THE Manly arts community has come together in aid of one of their own who is battling cancer.

A charity art show, A Very Kere Christmas, has been organised to raise money for local artist and founder of Red Olive Studio and Underground ARTspace, Kere Baker.

After overcoming thyroid cancer in 2008, Mrs Baker was diagnosed with a rare form of lymphoma earlier this year.

Mrs Baker said she was in disbelief at the show of support.

“I want all the community to know what these incredible people have done,” she said.

The event will include an art exhibition, silent auction, live music and kids activities.

It will be hosted by George Houvardas who played Carbo on Packed to the Rafters.

28th NOVEMBER 2011

It's  this  weekend  Peeps!

My amazing friend and psuedo big sister Kath has put together this incredible day, every aspect of which is blowing my mind. The support from friends, Artists, businesses, strangers, friends of friends and even friends of strangers has made this already one of the most incredible things I've even witnessed. We (myself, Adrian and Lanya) have tried and succeeded in keeping a feeling of being blessed along the way. Yes, it's unquestionably been the most challenging, hideous, terrifying and generally overwhelming year this year, but we've tried to have faith in the process, the Universe and the people around us who have helped us fight this every step of the way. We've learned so much, about ourselves, each other - and people. Read on, it's late and I can't sleep. Babbling I shall go...

A_very_KERE_Christmas

Like every journey, the bad comes with the good. We've actually lost friends and people close to us this year. I've stopped trying to work out why - it's too hard. I felt for a long time like there were certain people I served no purpose to anymore, like they had nothing to gain now. I know some have thought it perhaps in poor taste I've been so open about all of this, but quite frankly that's their issue, not mine. I've felt in a way that being so public provides somewhat of a social ...accountabilty? for me for lack of a better word. If I loiter too long at the edge, I know one of you will notice. And that knowledge has more often that not actually kept me from the edge. And quite frankly however one chooses to deal with such a nightmare, I kind of figure whatever helps right? What's that saying about not judging lest you be judged? Your words of support have without question HELPED ME SURVIVE!!!

Obviously we clearly have also  taken a HUGE  financial  beating this year, and the debt has seemed insurmountable most of the time. We've tried to keep gratitude at the forefront. Glad I'm not dealing Angio T cell Lymphoma in Afghanistan. Glad I'm not a Chinese born female (cause let's face it, would they have fought this heard for me?) Glad I live in a country where I've had the medical options I've had. Glad I was born now, not 20 years ago when I never would have made it this far. I focus on these things while the wolves at at the door.

I focus on the fact that I have an incredible friend  pulling this together because she loves us, and hates seeing how this disease has picked at every part of our lives. I focus that I've made and met beautiful people along the way that have supported her to pull this together, in all manor of ways , and for her friends who I don't even know helping her do this for us. There really is a LOT to be grateful for.  I seem chirpy a lot, but I wouldn't be human if I didn't have bad days. Really bad days...

I'm sad to tell you this, but in the spirit of how open I've been about everything - I think I should, and it illustrates a lot of the other stuff too. For the THIRD time this year, on top of dealing with Cancer and everything that brings, trying to save a space we JUST created as a place of beauty and healing - we've been robbed. THREE TIMES! The first time, my cash tin was stolen which included a large amount of consignment money to give to an Artist. Not only had I worked hard, so had she. She deserved to be paid. The second time, was when my gorgeous ARTspace girls put together an open weekend alonside the Manly Arts Festival and had a donation tin. Someone took all the money out of the tin. The most recent, this Saturday, they took all the cash in the premises. I'd left some money for the cleaner (who also deserves to be paid) and some float money. No forced entry. Similar situation everytime. Appalling huh! I honestly can't think of a more repulsive way to treat people. It's hard to have rummaged through and around the ARTspace and not know of our current situation - so it really is stealing from people who have nothing to give, (but would if they could). So, if they are creepy enough to be reading this (and stranger things really have happend) this brings me back to gratitude. I figure to do such a despicable thing, they must be really desperate or really awful. Either way, I'd rather be me, for all these issues - than steal from someone in this situation.

We almost finished hanging the ART Exhibition on Sunday (Thanks Viv, Deb, David, Pascal & Min) and firstly it's one of the best I've seen (certainly the best collection I've shown) and there is HEAPS AND HEAPS of beautiful Art. The second thing you can't help by be struck by, is the overwhelming sense of love and courage. We stood there, ater 10pm (me barely able to move by this point) and we were surrounded by SOOOO MUCH beauty - both the visual and the spiritual. Every piece there had been donated by beautiful souls to help us and show us support and kindness. The place has an audible HUM. I can even remember it now, 24 hours later. I am not even aware of half of the donated goods/products/services - but I know there's HEAPS of cool things. The shop will be OPEN on the day too, everything will be 20% off. There's a heaps of things which will be great for Christmas...and there's just so many options. So many cool things going on AND I'm happy to report if I can stay well, I'm even allowed to go along for a couple of hours too! EXCITEMENT.

So, on that note - I really need to do better at this proper nights sleep buzz, and I bid you Goodnight. I can't wait for my next post. It's a THANK YOU post. I want you to know (and will be actively going on and on and on) about all the people that have supported this and us, and encouraging you to support their businesses too. Good people deserve to be thanked. I'm learning this lesson most of all.

Peace out...NEK MINNIT it's the BIG DAY!!!

x

24th SEPTEMBER 2011

Hey my wonderful clients, friends, friends to be.

I'm off to hospital next week for my stem cell transplant (much sooner than I thought). I'll be in for quite some time, and the recovery is 3-4 month, so I'll be off the radar for awhile. I wanted to sent you a quick message thanking you all for everything over the years, for your support, encouragement - business and otherwise. You've always inspired me to inspire you and made sure I've loved what I do. I've always been utterly devoted to the idea of one's space being their haven, and believe in that even more now, seeing how much my healing improves when I'm home and have my favourite things and memories around me. I've always thought that 'current trends' are one thing, but good style is eternal. Remember, your surroundings tell your story - not mine, or not the magazines. People often tell me that they "have no idea about buying Art." They're the best buyers. They buy because they love it, and they feel something. That's all any Artist wants, is to make that connection - and share a little of themselves with you. The trick is working with what you've got, who you are - and a little bit of putting it together well.

As you know, the ARTspace is still there, with a little gift shop. My gorgeous ARTspace Angels are there Tues-Fri 10am - 3pm. There's always great things, and wonderful Art on the walls. Pop in anytime. I'm blessed to have filled the space with amazing creative people who love the space like I do, and believe in what they do and why they do it. Not to mention being incredibly wonderful human beings, so go meet them sometime. You won't regret it.

A dear friend set up a page which my husband and I will try to maintain if you're interested. We'll be having some fundraising events in the next while, including an Art Auction/Concert one fine Sunday afternoon, so it'll keep you posted on stuff like that.

FOR THOSE WITH OR WITHOUT FACEBOOK - follow us here:  www.facebook.com/ThreeLBirds

Miss you all already. Be well, kind and colourful.

9 SEPTEMBER 2011

Kia Ora, Talofa, Hello!

It's been awhile. Still fighting, and still winning alas this journey will go on for a bit longer for me. As you can imagine, one of the things that keeps me sane is my beautiful ARTspace, knowing it's there - and why I created it, gives me so much joy. For those of you that don't know, it was a happy accident, my now beloved ARTspace. Looking for a studio (for MONTHS) I couldn't find anything big enough, affordable or permanent enough. And then a chance meeting led me there - which was at that stage a damp, dirty underground hole. My husband could've killed me, but it was love. Especially when I saw the amazing backyard. I wanted to create a space where people were free to explore their individual creativity, with some style and stability. Where they were free to just be, regardless of what they did. A place where your "stuff" got left at the door, and you were surrounded by likeminded people in a safe environment. It has never mattered to us what the studio Artists did in their space, or what their level or expertise were in their respective fields. What mattered to us was who they were, as people. That was the only way I believed something like this, with so much creative energy would work. I have had a few come and go since they beginning, and it's always been with heartache and respect. I have a genuine respect, and deep affection for everyone who has ever been involved in the ARTspace. The women that are there now, are the wings I fall on. They have all stepped up and kept the heart of the ARTspace beating. Which brings me to now...

You may have (hopefully) seen around that it's currently the Manly Arts Festival. This locale is incredible for supporting it's creatives, and this weekend culminates a lot of it. My amazing creatives have done all the work involved in having the ARTspace involved in the Arts Festival, even with my considerable absence. They've created and curated a gorgeous Exhibition in the main Gallery of new and older works for your viewing pleasure, and are this weekend opening their studios to you. We'd love you to pop down and meet us, and have a look around. It's been a long time since our doors have been opened as you know! My previous, Red Olive retail space, has also slotted into the area like it's always been - so there's LOADS to see.

WHERE: 1/294 Sydney Road, Balgowlah 2093

WHEN: Saturday 10am-6pm and Sunday 10am-4pm

Also, we have but ONE SPARE STUDIO!! Flexible, affordable. Great space - go along and check it out if you're currently looking for a space. Available NOW.

My very very best to you all x

***INSET FOR ARTISTS!

We have but ONE studio space available! Affordable, and surrounded by some wonderful like minded folk - don't delay. Our studios go really quickly! Please reply asap to arrange viewing. x

Well hello there, it really has been a long time.

I've been racking my brain thinking of how to explain my absence to you all, and I've decided to just be straight with you about it. Most of you are either close friends, or friends I've not met yet, and I've always communicated as such - so I thought, rather that allow speculation and confusion, I'll put it out there. After a period of illness, I was recently diagnosed with an aggressive and rare form of cancer - Angioimmmunoblastic T cell lymphoma. It's been a really rough few months of hospital, chemo and will be a rough little while to follow. What the cancer didn't count on was that it's host was a rare and aggressive Scorpio Kiwi Woman who is planning on kicking its butt!!

I know a lot of you will be shocked by this, but please know I'm fighting, I'm strong - so don't underestimate me for a second. Also, your instinct will be to hit reply - but just to let you know my inbox is at capacity and I already have thousands and thousands of emails to get through, so I won't be offended or upset if I don't hear from you :)

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR Red Olive Studios and the ARTspace?

Retail: Well, we all knew I was planning changes, just nothing this drastic! Obviously I won't be taking on any new Design clients this year, but am still available for sourcing a buying for past clients. The Retail space was recently finished being set up by an incredible Sydney Stylist, and dear friend Melanie Redman and looks fantastic. She did the most incredible job, it wasn't easy handing over for a control freak like me, but I'm thrilled with what she's done. We have all our old ranges and MANY new stunning products so feel free to email me, but I'm in the process of working out staffing until I'm back at full capacity. Also, and never more required than now, I'll be trying to get online.

Wednesdays                10am - 3pm (Midori)

Thursdays / Fridays       10am - 3pm (Petra)

Petra's vintage & Midori Furze will be opening Red Olive Studios!

As I may have mentioned in an earlier email, we are thrilled to have Petra and her wonderful wares at the ARTspace. Stepping into Petra's space is a thrill for those of you who are clothes horses, and even for those (me) that are usually covered in paint! Petra honestly does have something for everyone, and her prices are incredible.  These are not just seconds, it is DESIGNER runway seconds. I'm a terrible clothing buyer, and as such avoid it, dress badly a lot and don't enjoy it. Now I don't need to! Support a local creative AND the environment.

A lot of you may have already heard of our dear Midori. She is becoming a must know Artist in our own neck of the woods, and greater Sydney as a whole. Midori's work ranges from delicate oil paintiings to bold acrylics and more recently the most gorgeous fragile origami pieces. We are really lucky to have Midori in our Studios, and get to watch these idea evolve.

Petra and Midori are both in their studios on the above days, and have very kindly offered to open up the front doors to our favourite customers so that you may still have access to Red Olive and all our goodies! We're hoping to increase the hours soon, but we're extremely greatful for this, and can't wait for you all to check out our wonderful pieces.

Studios: We have ONE spot available! If you know of anyone, please let us know quickly as they go FAST! I'm genuinely lucky to have a space filled with not only incredibly creative, but also incredibly wonderful genuine people, and in the next little while I'll be sending little blurbs about each of them, their respective businesses and updating the website accordingly. We have some new, diverse and super exciting stuff going on in there and I can't wait to tell you all, all about it.

Gallery Space: While obviously I won't be hosting any new Group shows for the next little while, the Gallery is available from August 1st again for Solo shows, Seminars, and Art classes. One of the things we're most proud of is being one of (if not the) most affordable spaces in the area, so email us for a looksee. Outside of opening hours, we will have works displayed by our Studios Artists, so there's always something to see!

Artworks: Most of my Artworks are loaded on the Facebook page. http://www.facebook.com/pages/RED-OLIVE-STUDIOS/51959550971 If there is anything you want, please email to arrange a viewing. We can arrange postage/delivery on your behalf anywhere in the world.

I sincerely hope this note finds you all wonderful, well and as always chasing your creative bliss.

xxx Kere

Or how about one of my favourite clients telling me I'm "Sydney's worst dressed Decorator." Music to my ears.

Christmas_Invite_Back

  • Hello dear readers, I sincerely hope this email finds you fabulous!
I am actually giddy with excitement to bring you word of our next group show - the 'Inaugural Christmas Art Sale.' I know I always say that I'm excited about the Artists I'm showing (and I do always genuinely mean it or I wouldn't be showing them) but I'm extra excited about this show, not only because it's the silly season - but I'm introducing 7 NEW Artists to the ARTspace, and also showing some of my favourites from throughout the year.
I remember after I opened with the 'Editors Pic(k)s'  Group show, everyone was buzzing with the incredibly talented and diverse selection of works we had on offer - that there was some speculation as to whether we could do it again. As you well know if you came to the 'Underground ARTmarkets' Exhibition, we did indeed nail it again. That show was just as show stopping as the first one. You all know me well enough (even if not directly, but from the 'quirky' email updates I send) to know that I am not the type to claim something is, that isn't - and I'm hear to tell you that this show will be all of these things:
    AMAZING / BREATHTAKING / INSPIRING / CONFRONTING / ACCESSIBLE / AFFORDABLE / INTRIGUING / THOUGHTFUL AN BRAVE.
That's a pretty big statement, and I stand by it. There's a few reasons you should NOT miss this Exhibition.
  • This will be the ONLY sale we offer through the year where you have the opportunity to purchase discounted and previously shown works, and works reduced or even created just for the purpose of this Exhibition.
  • We have an incredible selection of both Established and emerging Artists - all of whom are displaying works old and new for your viewing. This means there's something for everyone by way of style, size, price and materials.
  • The Artists are all putting together Bio's for display to share their story with you. It's all part of the 'bigger picture' if you'll excuse the pun, but the story behind the Artists, and the work itself is often just as remarkable as the piece of Art they've created. They've all made a choice and effort to follow their creative paths through one inspiring reason or another, and I look forward to sharing a bit of their story with you.
  • There's so much waste and plastic and general madness purchase at Christmas. Why not support local Arts, and give your nearest and dearest a gift that they will cherish, that will always mean something - not to mention retain and increase in value!
  • If nothing else, as we all know - our Openings are a blast! :)
Really looking forward to seeing you there!
Colourfully yours,
Kere

14 OCTOBER 2010

Hello there!

How have you been? Well I hope. I've been busy doing all sorts of things, and I thought it was about time I shared some of them with you....

RED OLIVE STUDIOS

  • Firstly, there are LOADS of changes planned here. I'll be totally changing the look of the place - removing the front panel and have some fantastic new stock/furniture arriving for the November / December periods. The place will be much more...well me really. A bit brighter, more industrial and textured....ALSO, we'll be making a big effort to share some of the amazing Art/Artists from the ARTspace with the shop too. Lot's of small works, from some big names!

To help us clear some room for all this fab new stock, we're having a big SALE! 20% off absolutely everything. Some things in there have already been reduced, and the discount is from the original price. For the most part, it's loads more though, and that being said - we're really open to negotiations during this time.

  • Just today we collected our brand new GIFT VOUCHERS! These can be for any amount you wish - and are a brilliant idea for those unsure of exactly what gift to give that special someone.

How about considering a Colour or Design Consultation for Christmas? Do you know anyone that just can't make that step between their best intentions and beginning the project? I could be just the thing they need. Great idea for wedding presents too, Birthday and really any occasion at all...

UNDERGROUND ARTSPACE

  • This place has been AMAZING from the time we opened the doors. We consider ourselves really lucky with the Artists occupying our studios - and also the ones that have been involved in our shows. Both shows have been incredible and amazingly well received. Both really diverse, both AMAZING. It blows my mind constantly all the talent !!! It's a privilege bringing such great Art to you.

NEXT SHOW :: We are having our first  "CHRISTMAS ART SALE" show throughout December. We're bringing as many Artists and Artworks as we can for this show. Often there's some end of year/older works Artists will part with for MUCH less than the usual price. It's an amazing time to collect work from your favourite Artists - and nothing says I love you during Christmas like an original piece of Art. The show will be hung in price order for ease of viewing/sales, and you'll be invited to take the work with you straight away if you desire.

  • FIRST SHOW NEXT YEAR ::  The first group show planned is for February and themed 'For the LOVE of MUSIC' and is an exploration of each Artists connection to music/song/lyrics and how it inspire their work. It's totally conceptual/contemporary and not in the least bit literal. I used to know a musician that saw colours in songs. As you know, alot of my own work is inspired by song lyrics. We've started receiving submissions for this show already and WOW.

MORE SHOWS :: We have some other amazing group shows we've started planning. We will be taking various solo shows throughout the year, and will extend invitations to you where we can. Two of the group shows I can reveal will be:

1) An Animal Affair... you guessed it, our beloved pets becomes the focus! In the last few months I've seen some incredible interpretations of the bond between animal and human and can't wait to explore this further.

2) SHE IS GODDESS ... a show entirely dedicated to the female energy, and all things that 'she' represents.

3) EACH CHILD IS BORN AN ARTIST ... Exploring Picasso's theory (which I TOTALLY support) "Each Child is born an Artist, the problem is how to remain an Artist once he grows up..." Pablo Picasso 1918. This is a show open to our children - will keep you posted!

SPECIAL MENTION

A HUGE THANK YOU to Peter and Penny Turnbull of www.betterbuythedozen.com.au for very generously supplying the wine for our last show, and also their fantastic company! Peter and Penny are big supporters of the underground ARTspace, and on top of this, also big supporters of our local Artists. Thanks again, it has been a real pleasure.

Seriously though, www.betterbuythedozen.com.au is a wonderful service bringing you great wine and even better prices. Check 'em out!

Hope this note finds you seriously fabulous.

Always yours, always colourful ;-)

17 AUGUST 2010

What's not new at Red Olive Studios! It's surely been a busy and wonderful month to be sure. We had the official opening of the underground ARTspace Gallery on Thursday 5th August. It was a truly incredible evening with lots of amazing people and wonderful feedback. We had the brilliant Ngaiire Joseph singing an Acoustic set - and for the most part you couldn't hear her - and Ngaiire has a MASSIVE voice! We are all really proud of what we've done with the ARTspace, and the amazing talented Artists that we're meeting and supporting. Here's a link to our Red Olive Facebook page with some images from the opening night taken by the talented Bronwyn Liebke of www.petclix.com.au.  http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=237022&id=51959550971

Also we have 6-7 new studio spaces coming up in the next few months, so if you're an Artist, Photographic, Graphic Artist, Designer, Textile person - a creative type of any kind at all, this might be the space for you! We have our next show coming up, the 'underground ARTmarkets' which is running in conjunction with the Manly Arts Festival. There'll be a market type feel with table set up where you can purchase works on paper, photographic prints, and all manor of Art pieces ranging from small canvas works, Dioramas to an amazing painting piece that is over 7 ft tall! We would LOVE to see you there :)

You don't need to send exhibitors fees until we have advised that you have a place in the exhibition, and I will send you banking details then if you don't already have them.
:: The costs for a wall space are $110.00 and the same for a table which will suit small works, photographic prints and works on paper (in portfolio). Should you wish to have both a table and a wall space, the fee is reduced to $200.00. PLEASE advise with your application what you require/prefer.
I'm so excited to be working with some of you again, and even more of you for the first time. Peta and I are absolutely thrilled with the submissions for our shows so far - what an amazing bunch you all are!
All best, Kere & Crew
P.S. Don't forget the space is available for your own solo shows. We run these at cost, so it's a more affordable way for you to exhibit your wonderful works. Let us know if you want a submission form for a solo show. :)

'underground ARTmarkets'
...................

Saturday 4th  -  Saturday 19th September

The Exhibition will be running totally in conjunction with the Manly Arts Festival, so it will be a fantastic time to not only gain exposure in the Northern Beaches Area, you will also be amongst a group of like minded people, exhibiting in a very affordable way.

The Exhibition opens Saturday 4th September at 10am, with the official 'Opening Night' being 4 - 6pm that evening. This Exhibition also runs for longer than usual group shows (to fit in with the duration of the M.A.F) and encompasses 3 entire weekends.

We will be running from 4th - 19 September. Opening days/hours will be a little different at:

Saturdays 10 - 4pm, Sun, Mon, Tues 10 - 2pm. And as always by after hours appointment.

Furthermore, we will be taking more works than usual, we plan to have tables along the centre of the gallery featuring smaller works, photographic prints for sale and works on paper.  What a fantastic opportunity to maximise your potential sales,  while we are maximising your potential exposure!

Think about what is best for you - be it wall space, a table - or both!  Costs will be the same for wall area as they are for a table in the centre - so you tell us what best suits your needs, and we'll make it happen! If you want wall AND table, please advise in your responding email. (Discounts can be discussed for those wishing to take both these options.)

To be included in this event, please email us (with images) by either responding to this email, or with the subject:  Next Group Show 'underground ART-markets.'

3 JULY 2010

So the new shop is open. It's teeny weeny, but power packed! We have some great new suppliers, have increased the range of the existing ones, and have some exciting new ones on the way! Stop by and say HI sometime.  I drink weak skim latte's by the way ;-)

Also, now things are slowing down a little (yeah right) I'm taking on new clients again. I talk about how I work a little differently to most decorators, and it's true. My level of involvement is up to you. We have our initial 'brainstorm' session, and if you like my idea I can implement them for you, or give you the tools/advice you need to do it yourself. I'm ok either way, so long as the end result is you having a space you love. It's the outcome that matters to me, and I 'm happy to just be part of the process.

And guess what, the gallery is about to open! We're having a Group show to celebrate. We're bringing you some of our favourite works from some of our favourite creatives! Watch this space, we'll be posting the invitations soon :)

IT'S TIME, WE ARE FINALLY OPENING!!

We are now calling for submissions for our opening night celebrations, with

a Group show to introduce YOU the ARTspace AND

our favourite Artists to theNorthern Beaches.

20 JUNE 2010

A big thank you to everyone that came along to the opening night of 'The Layers of HER' at the Arthouse, and all of you who have come along since. It's been really great sharing it with you all.

As you know, I've moved out of the space at Wanganella Street in Balgowlah, and am busily unpacking and styling my new little shop at 103 Sydney Road, Manly. (OPENING Thursday 1st JULY) It's teeny weeny but filled to the rafters with some fabulous new goodies. We increased our range of bone china and ceramics from 'Have you met Miss Jones,' stocked up on 'Aunty Cookie' and all manor of vintage/antique/retro furniture - in fact have an overflow spilling into the underground ARTspace...but that's another story :)

We are introducing 2 new ranges of home scents to our store. We are thrilled to advise we are once again stocking the Jaye Niemi range of Aroma Reeds and Candles. Jaye Niemi has long been a favourite of ours, since the Vermilion Home days, and epitomises the very best in Interior Perfumes. Pure, environmentally friendly - and due to the quality ingredients burns for almost twice as long as the common candle ranges on the market. Also for every purchase of Jaye Niemi aroma reeds, we are giving you a free Fragrant Bath soap in Grapefruit and Jojoba to try. (RRP $14.95) Believe me, we've tried it, WE LOVE IT!

We are also stocking 'Space Candles' which are a lovely collection, boxed in black and white, and made from 100% natural vegetable wax which is cleaner burner with no nasty toxic chemicals. They come in a range of delicious scents such as Tuberose, Sweet Fig, Cranberry - and many others...

The underground ARTspace - Gallery is opening soon too. We have taken on Peta Morris, an amazing local creative to co-curate the shows with us, and assist with the exhibitions. It is important to us to remain an Artist run space, so anyone else that will be working within the space, will be a local Artist, and furthermore have a connection with YOUR work. I'll send you more information soon, but wanted to let you know we are now taking submissions for our opening night Group show/Exhibition. The theme is along the lines of 'Editors Picks.' It is introducing the new ARTspace to the public, so it will be a selection of both mine and Peta's favourite Artworks/Artists. There are limited spots, so please contact us ASAP with interest, and an image of the work/s you want us to choose from. I've got a few fun ideas for the opening night too, so watch this space ;P We are also now taking submissions for solo exhibitions for 2010, so please email us if you want to discuss a solo show, and we will send you a submission application.

Phew, that was big for a Sunday morning! Hope you are all wonderful :-)

11 MAY 2010

FINALLY! WE WOULD LOVE TO SEE YOU THERE X

The_Layers_of_HER_Invitation

My latest collection ‘The layers of HER (the goddess collection)’ takes a journey backwards to come forwards. It is an abstract reference, or glimpse at all the layers that make up a woman; and all the ones that get stripped away. It’s an exploration of who we are and more about what we don’t want than do. It’s the regeneration, the recreation and the reinvention that make HER journey an interesting one. Confused? Don’t be. Well, do be - but enjoy the journey.

History is steeped with reference to the divine woman, the Goddess. She who gives – she who takes away. She is evolution, creation – she is the beginning, and the end.  There is a fire inside her. Inextinguishable. You can see it in her  eyes, (if you dare to look and linger) - the flicker of the flame. Like the Goddess Kali, here the fire is eternal.

Due to recent health issues, my recent works focus strongly on the female form, and the perception of beauty that this creates. Losing control of aspects of my own body and appearance, and the esteem issues that go with this, make this latest collection a very personal one for me.  Looking around, (both inwards and outwards) at all the things I am, and we are as women.   It’s an exploration of all our unique flaws, and breathtaking beauty – the things that make us different, yet the same – just in a different wrapping.  It’s the simple things, the simple beauties, that often gets missed or misdirected, or never seen at all.

The lines of a back (a back that carries the weight of the world), the strength of calf muscle (that leads her family on many a journey), the curve of her neck (as she faces forward, again in a new direction), the slight of her hand (as she gives with abundance).

Contrast plays heavily along with illusion of texture and light. It explores the layers that overlap, fray, evolve and begin again. No attempt has been made to disguise any of the brush strokes in these pieces – I’m showing you the journey of the form, the changes, the growth of the piece.  Negative images become positive along with abstracted play on lines, solid colour and a dreamlike approach to layering and memories – hard and soft – all things it is to be female.

For all these reasons, and then some - this collection is dedication, and a celebration of my own life Goddesses. It is, and will be named after all the women in my own life who have divinely inspired me. Inspired, supported, encouraged beyond words – been there to care, to nurture, to listen and to sing. Woman I have learned from, without their conscious teaching, women who I have respected, without their demand of it from me.  Women I have loved, laughed with and looked forward with. The light of all these women shines bright in my world. You know who you are, this is for you. x
