Melinda’s eclectic work is developed from her obsession with recycled materials. She often uses old artworks, photocopies, newspaper clippings, letters (old and new), postcards, wallpaper, gift-wrapping, unique fabric, stitching, acrylics, pastels, annotation and charcoal.

After living in Switzerland for six years, her earlier works often involved a scene of Europe or an abstract representation of an interior design, figure or a particular place. More recent work captures Melinda’s recent fascination with bugs and the scientific documentation of peculiar insects. She is also very interested in sewing and collecting rare fabrics and patterns.

Linking these two obsessions together, Melinda created the series ‘Nature Out There’ which was exhibited in ‘2 x 2’, an annual art show with Peta Morris in December 2009. Melinda has a very unique style and her works are a mastery of composition with a sense of colour ranging from the subtlest effects to a blaze of brilliance.

Melinda says she loves the lifestyle of the Northern Beaches and is often down the beach with her family. “Although we are confined to a small living space, we enjoy the endless possibilities of the outdoors. The girls love being outside and exploring. It gives us this wonderful sense of freedom living so close to such a beach!”

In the future, Melinda has plans to continue exhibiting in places which encapsulate her unique style. Melinda will continue to work on canvas and paper with the notion of nature (bugs, insects, plants and flowers) all merging into one artwork. She would like to explore the idea of overlapping materials and bring in a kind of sewn nature quality to her work. She also intends to explore the avenue of fashion and design to incorporate more diverse influences into her various larger pieces.
